Netflix will pay homage to the late Indian filmmaker Yash Chopra and his studio Yash Raj Films with the release of a star-studded four-part documentary series, “The Romantics.”
The series will examine the impact of the studio on Bollywood over the past 50 years and feature 35 leading figures in the Hindi-language film industry.
The streamer will release the series globally on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, in honor of Chopra, who is recognized as the father of romance in Indian cinema.
Chopra’s romantic films, such as “Silsila,” “Lamhe,” “Kabhi Kabhie,” “Veer-Zaara,” “Dil To Pagal Hai,” “Chandni” and “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” have left a lasting impact on Indian cinema.
The documentary is directed by Smriti Mundhra, an Oscar and Emmy-nominated filmmaker who created “Indian Matchmaking” and has directed episodes of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever.”
“Yash Chopra’s films brought in a new wave of emotion, individualism and cultural change to Hindi cinema and helped turn one of the biggest film industries in the world into what it is today,” Monika Shergill, VP of content at Netflix India, said in a statement.
Yash Raj Films has been behind some of India’s biggest box office hits, including “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” “War,” “Sultan,” “Mohabbatein,” the Tiger franchise and the “Dhoom” franchise.
Its latest release, “Pathan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, is India’s highest-grossing film of the year so far.
The trailer for “The Romantics” has been released in 190 countries and subtitled in 32 languages. Watch it below:
