Indian American filmmaker Sujata Day to write new ‘American Pie’ movie

The film will be a “fresh take” on the franchise based on Day’s pitch, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Its plot and details are still under wraps, but it will be developed under Universal 1440 Entertainment, the production arm of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group,
“Obsessed with raunchy comedies and American Pie is one of my all-time faves,” Day wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday. “So excited to be working on this movie.”
Day, a 38-year-old Indian American filmmaker, began her career starring in a recurring role as Sarah, a staff member of the nonprofit organization We Got Y’all in HBO’s “Insecure.”
She made her directorial debut with the 2020 movie “Definition Please,” where she starred as Monica, a former spelling bee champion who tries to reconnect with her estranged family.
Definition Please” won several awards, including best narrative feature at the 2020 CAAMFest and outstanding directorial debut at the South Asian Film Festival of America that same year.
Day’s movie was later acquired by Array, a publishing company launched by American filmmaker Ava DuVernay, to stream on Netflix on Jan. 21.
A daughter of Indian immigrants, Day grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and has a degree in engineering. She previously held positions at nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting talents in the film industry, having been a fellow at Sundance Lab, an influencer at Sundance Film Festival and an HBO Visionaries ambassador, among other roles.
The first installment of the “American Pie” series, which consists of four movies, was written by Adam Herz and directed by Paul Weitz. It features Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Sean William Scott, Alyson Hannigan and Eugene Levy and was released in 1999. Actor John Cho of Harold and Kumar” reportedly popularized the slang term “MILF” after briefly appearing in the first film.
