TSA Paid IBM $336,413 For an App That Simply Points Left and Right

The app created for the Transportation Security Administration is essentially software that randomly assigns passengers to either go in the left or right lines when they go through airport security, reported Mashable.

Such an app is so simple to make that a student just learning to code could have built it since random number generators are often taught in beginning programming courses.

TSA agents used the app to randomly assign passengers to different PreCheck lines as part of a program called “managed inclusion,” which was created to make it harder for terrorists to predict patterns in security lines and to reduce racial profiling. The app was used in more than 100 airports in the U.S., according to Bloomberg.

The program was discontinued in 2015 after a convicted felon was discovered to have been placed in a PreCheck line.
