Taiwan Ranks #1 in the World As the Best Destination For Expats In 2016
Taiwan has been named the best expat destination in this year’s InterNations Expat Insider Survey. The newcomer took the record off two-time champion Ecuador.
The survey had 14,000 respondents representing 174 nationalities and 191 countries or territories. These expats were inquired about ease of settling in, family life, personal finance, quality of life and working abroad, among others.
Results placed Taiwan on top of the list, followed by Malta, Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Australia, Austria and Luxembourg. Czech Republic completed the Top 10.
Meanwhile, Tanzania, Italy, Qatar, Mozambique, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Nigeria, Greece and Kuwait were the Bottom 10.
Taiwan ranked first in the Quality of Life and Personal Finance Indices. As it turned out, 64% of its expats plan to stay longer than three years, while 36% hope to stay forever.
The country also appears to offer favorable financial conditions, as 85% of expats claimed satisfaction over their money. The survey expressed:
“Looking at these results, it comes as no surprise that one in six expats living in Taiwan has entered the country seeking — and obviously finding — a better standard of living.”
Popular sites in the country include skyscraper Taipei 101, Sun Moon Lake, Taroka National Park, Fort Santo Domingo and the National Palace Museum.
“Taiwan is our big winner. It’s the best place for quality of life as well as for personal finances. They are doing something very right there.”
Yet Taiwan did not perform best with regards to Ease of Settling In (10th). While it ranked first in the Friendliness subcategory, it fell at 45th in the Language subcategory.
This is the survey’s third year, and Kuwait, Greece and Nigeria remained at the end of the pack. Greece particularly ranked last in the Personal Finance and Working Abroad Indices, while Nigeria tailed at the Cost of Living and Quality of Life Indices.
InterNations is among the world’s largest networks for people who live overseas.
