‘Star Trek: Section 31’ film with Michelle Yeoh begins production, adds new cast

Breaking the news: Executive producer Alex Kurtzman announced in a statement that the principal photography for “Star Trek: Section 31” has started. The movie, which was initially planned as a CBS All Access series, will continue the events from “Star Trek: Discovery,” as previously reported.

The film also added seven new cast members. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe,” Kurtzman said.

What to expect: Yeoh, who won a best actress award for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” at last year’s Oscars, will reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou. First introduced in “Discovery,” Georgiou, leader of the mirror universe’s fascistic Terran Empire, ends up with the Federation’s covert Section 31 after crossing into the prime universe.

“Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, [Georgiou] also must face the sins of her past,” the official film description reads.

New cast members: Joining Yeoh in the Olatunde Osunsanmi-directed film are Omari Hardwick (“Power”), Kacey Rohl (“Hannibal”), Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”), Robert Kazinsky (“Pacific Rim”), Humberly Gonzalez (“Ginny & Georgia”), James Hiroyuki Liao (“Barry”) and Sven Ruygrok, who also appeared in Netflix’s “One Piece.”

In the meantime: Yeoh recently starred in the highly praised Netflix show “The Brothers Sun,” where she plays Eileen Sun, a mother-of-two who moved to Los Angeles with one of their sons to escape their family, one of Taipei’s most renowned gangsters.

She is also set to voice the malevolent force Loo in the Paramount Plus movie “The Tiger’s Apprentice,” which will premiere on Feb. 2.
