Behold the Gyeondyo bar, which claims itself capable of “healing a hangover.” It’s a witty name actually, because “gyeondyo” means “hang in there.”
Its secret lies in the oriental raisin tree fruit juice found at the center (0.7%), which, according to ABC News, has been used by Koreans as a hangover remedy since the 17th century.
Dr. Lee Byeong Sam, a Seoul-based physician, explained:
“Mixing such ingredients with cold ice cream could be an effective way to lower body temperature for people whose body temperature has risen from drinking. But, it is not recommended for people with naturally low body temperatures.”
Gyeondyo bar is covered by a grapefruit-flavored shell. Many agree that it tastes better than conventional hangover cures.
A beverage called “Hutgae Condition” has been leading the hangover cure market for years, but Korean consumers say it’s not so delicious.
In an earlier press release, the ice pop is described as expressing, “the hardships of employees who have to suffer a working day after heavy drinking, as well as to provide comfort to those who have to come to work early after frequent nights of drinking.”
South Korea has a working culture where employees, after their shift, drink with bosses and colleagues almost every day. This makes hangover cures a big industry, with about 150 billion ($126 million) in annual sales. Products range from pills and beverages to cosmetics, Reuters noted.
