Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s “Beef,” will pen the script for Marvel Studios’ upcoming movie “Thunderbolts.”
Lee will reunite with “Beef” director Jake Schreier, who is directing “Thunderbolts,” and star Steven Yeun, who will be joining the film’s cast, according to Variety.
Lee will rewrite the script, which was previously given a first pass by Marvel mainstay Eric Pearson (“Black Widow,” “Thor: Ragnarok”).
Lee has previously written for TV shows such as “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “2 Broke Girls,” “Silicon Valley,” “Dave” and “Tuca & Bertie.”
“I’m rewriting it,” Lee told Variety. “It’s the whole squad again. Jake asked me if I would come on board. I probably should have taken a break, but there’s a lot of themes and exciting things about the movie that I couldn’t help but sign on.”
He noted that working on a Marvel project is different from anything he has done before.

One, it’s not my project, it’s Jake’s. It’s such a large scope and scale that the type of writing is very different. At the same time, the process feels the same, I’m still talking to Jake every day. … I think once you find the squad of people you love and trust and are so talented, you do everything you can to keep working with them.

The plot of “Thunderbolts” is shrouded in secrecy.
Yeun’s exact role is still unknown, but in the comics, the Thunderbolts are a coalition of villains who go on dangerous missions assigned by the U.S. government.

“Thunderbolts” will feature a star-studded cast, including Florence Pugh as super spy Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as short-lived Captain America successor U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as C.I.A. Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri is also slated to appear in an undisclosed role.
“Thunderbolts” is scheduled to premiere on July 26, 2024.
