Japan has more centenarians than ever before, with women making up most of the total

The number of centenarians in Japan has reached a record high of 92,139, with women making up 88.5% of this total, according to data from the country’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
Record high: The record marks the 53rd consecutive annual increase, with the nation having 1,613 more centenarians compared to the previous year.
Japan has one of the world’s fastest-aging populations with an average of 73.74 centenarians per 100,000 people. Female centenarians totaled to 81,589, with the oldest woman being 116-year-old Fusa Tatsumi from Osaka Prefecture.
Life expectancy: According to the ministry, the average life expectancy for Japanese women was 87.09 years in 2022, while men had an average lifespan of 81.05 years. The increase is attributed to advances in medical care and nursing, with the number of centenarians in Japan growing from 153 in 1963 to the current record high.
