After successfully portraying Kamala Khan in Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel,” Iman Vellani is now co-writing a new comic based on the popular character.
About the comic: “Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant” is a four-issue limited series that Vellani will co-write with Sabir Pirzada, supervising producer and staff writer on the Disney+ show
“This was way scarier than joining the MCU for me,” the 20-year-old actor told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. “Those projects feel like they live in their own dimension, so I guess I can separate myself easier. But you can hold a comic book! I’ve never written anything before in my entire life, but I have read many comics, so I just wrote what I would want to read.”
As a longtime comic book fan, Vellani impressed Pirzada, who said, “It was actually a very humbling experience to work with Iman because she knows her comics even better than I do, and that is saying something.”
The story so far: Kamala Khan was an instant hit when the character was first introduced in her first headline series in 2014.
The new limited series, which follows the aftermath of Kamala’s death in “The Amazing Spider-Man,” will delve into the character’s identity as both an Inhuman and a mutant. Kamala’s mutant identity was revealed in the finale of her show and will also be further explored in the upcoming one-shot comic “X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1.”
“We are not reconning her Inhuman origin. That’s a part of Kamala’s identity that Marvel editorial and myself would very much like to keep and protect,” Vellani said. “Our book will absolutely reflect all those core themes of identity that the Ms. Marvel comics have consistently explored — only now there’s a whole new label that Kamala has to learn to accept.”
The artwork for “Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant” will be handled by artists Carlos Gómez and Adam Gorham, while the covers will be drawn by “Ultimate Spider-Man” artist Sara Pichelli.  The series will also feature a brand-new costume design created by Jamie McKelvie.
On the big screen: Vellani, who is set to reprise her role as Ms. Marvel in the upcoming film “The Marvels” later this year, has also caught the attention of “Shang-Chi” star Simu Liu.
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Liu shared he would like to work with Vellani in future Marvel Studios projects.
“I’ll single out Iman Vellani. First of all, she’s a fellow Canadian. She’s just so great,” he was quoted saying. “The few times I’ve met her, and all the conversations we’ve had, she’s just such a wonderful human being.”
He added, “It kind of, I guess, reminds me of myself in a way—she was such a big Marvel fan from before too. And it’s just surreal to her too, every bit of as much of a dream come true for her as it is for me.”
