Former child reality star Collin Gosselin, who appeared in the 2000s TLC reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” recently spoke up about how his mother, Kate Gosselin, would take her anger out on him before they became estranged.
Key details: Both Collin and his sister Hannah recalled their time on the show in an upcoming Vice TV docuseries titled “Dark Side of the 2000s,” which is set to premiere on July 18.
What Hannah is saying: In a clip shared by Vice TV last week, Hannah, 19, reveals that her brother “would be separated” from her and his six other siblings — Alexis, Joel, Leah, Aaden, Cara and Madelyn — and was not allowed to play or eat with them.
“I don’t think effort was made in the home to help him learn what behavior is acceptable and what behavior is not acceptable,” Hannah tells Vice TV.
What Collin is saying: Collin, 19, also talks about growing up in the spotlight, saying that while he was not “a perfect child,” his “misbehaving was no different” from that of his siblings.

I know my mother was going through a lot of things. I mean, a divorce and plenty of different things that can’t be easy to go through. … I want to think that she needed someone to take out her anger and frustration on, and that it was just kind of me, you know? I was in the way and I was there, so she chose me.”

About “Jon & Kate Plus 8”: Hannah and Collin starred alongside their siblings and parents in “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” which aired from 2007 to 2009. The show’s title was changed to “Kate Plus 8” after Jon and Kate got divorced in 2009, and its final episode was aired in 2017.
In November 2022, Collin shared in an interview that he believes the show tore their family apart, saying, “I want to believe it was because of TV and what being in the public eye does to a family.”
Becoming estranged: Kate reportedly institutionalized Collin when he was 12 years old because he had “special needs.” The TLC star never revealed what those needs were and noted that her son’s undisclosed institution was “where he needed to be.”
Jon eventually managed to remove Collin from the institution after his son reportedly begged for help in a letter in 2018. Later that year, Jon won sole custody of Collin after Kate failed to show up in court.
