2023 BAFTA Awards: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Dolly de Leon and Hong Chau land nominations

A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (“EEAAO”) continues to dominate this awards season after landing 10 nominations for the 2023 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.

The 2022 film was nominated for Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Original Score, Casting, Editing and Special Visual Effects. Both “EEAAO” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” trail behind Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which is the first film to earn 14 or more BAFTA nominations since “The King’s Speech” in 2011.

Golden Globe winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan also earned nominations for Leading Actress and Supporting Actor, respectively, for their roles in the multiverse-spanning spectacle.

Yeoh, 60, will be competing against Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), Ana De Armas (“Blonde”) and Emma Thompson (“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”).

Quan, 51, was nominated alongside Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”), Albrecht Schuch (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Micheal Ward (“Empire of Light”).

Nominated under the Supporting Actress category, Yeoh and Quan’s co-star Jamie Lee Curtis will compete against Filipino actor Dolly de Leon (“Triangle of Sadness”) and Vietnamese American actor Hong Chau (“The Whale”).

De Leon previously won Best Supporting Performance at last year’s Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards for her role in “Triangle of Sadness,” a satirical dark comedy that follows wealthy passengers who find themselves stranded on a desert island after being on a luxury cruise run by a Marxist captain. In the film, de Leon plays Abigail, a toilet manager on the cruise who ends up becoming the passengers’ leader. The movie has received BAFTA nominations for Original Screenplay and Casting.

Chau previously won the New York Film Critics Online Award for Best Supporting Actress. The Thailand-born actor has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Liz, the nurse and best friend of morbidly obese protagonist Charlie, played by Brendan Fraser, in “The Whale.” The Darren Aronofsky-directed film is based on a 2012 play of the same name and is about a 600-pound reclusive teacher who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

Other films either directed by or starring talent of Asian descent have also received recognition.

“Decision to Leave,” which currently leads the Asian Film Awards with 10 nominations, has also received BAFTA nominations for two categories: Director and Film Not in the English Language. The South Korean romantic mystery film was produced, co-written and directed by Park Chan-wook, who previously won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.

Disney Pixar’s “Turning Red,” which was directed by Chinese Canadian filmmaker Domee Shi, was nominated for the Animated Film category, while “All That Breathes,” a film about two brothers operating a bird hospital in India, will compete for the Documentary category.

“Bus Girl,” a short film about an aspiring young female chef, was nominated for the British Short Film category. It was written and directed by Jessica Henwick, who also stars as its lead. Henwick’s mother is of Singaporean Chinese descent.

The 2023 BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. GMT at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
