“Unstoppable” Angela Lee is back in the gym improving her skills and working out to become a better and stronger athlete.
To help the 21-year-old ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion get into the groove to train, she turns to Spotify on her mobile phone. There, she has curated her own playlist titled “Positive Vibes,” a dynamic collection of tracks which vary from classic rock songs like “Come Together” by ‘The Beatles’ to upbeat reggaeton “Rockabye” from Sean Paul, Clean Bandit, and Anne Marie.
Music, Lee says, puts her in the right frame of mind during training, and the results have been positive.
“I like this mix because it is a little bit of everything,” Lee said.
“There are a lot of different emotions. It starts off mellow and a bit slow, and then picks up towards the end. All of these songs mean something different to me and get me to feel a certain way. There are a lot of ups and downs, just like how it is in my training camp.”
The dynamic 33-track plus playlist dabbles with various emotions, but there is a specific artist that Lee tends to gravitate towards.
She listens to multiple songs by Russ, a southern hip-hop RNB singer, rapper, song-writer, and music producer who started releasing songs and albums on SoundCloud for free until he finally went platinum with his track, “What They Want”.
“I love Russ. He is probably my favorite artist right now,” Lee said.
“I love the way his songs are. I love the beat, I love the lyrics, and I really love his story. It is pretty inspiring to see all his hard work coming into fruition now, but also, as he is blowing up and becoming known worldwide, he still stays loyal to those that he came up with. I love that.”
Lee also listens to older rock compositions like pop culture staples, namely AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “Nothin’ But A Good Time” by Poison, and the epic track from the Rolling Stones “Sympathy For The Devil”.
“I love the energy that comes with it — the kind of energy that makes you wanna get up and dance or sing along as loud as you can! You can’t find songs like that on the radio nowadays,” she says.
Lee’s playlist also includes tracks from the 2000’s which she grew up listening to. Majority of these are hip-hop titles from Mary J. Blige with her Grammy-nominated “Family Affair”, “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” from Eve in collaboration with Gwen Stefani, and the husky rap tunes of Ja Rule featuring the smooth vocals of Ashanti in “Mesmerize”. According to Lee, these tracks give off a different feel during training.
With Lee’s mix incorporating old school rock songs, the R&B, hip-hop, and pop songs she grew up to, to the tracks from her favorite artists, the women’s atomweight champion has created a playlist that stays true to her personality.
“This is an accurate and honest representation of my taste in music,” Lee concluded.
“I do not have a specific genre. I just like what I like! Music is a huge part of my life, and you can learn a lot about a person by the kind of music they listen to. This is not a full representation of my style of music and who I am, but it is definitely a part of it — a part that I am happy to share with everyone.”
