South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in has issued a statement to deny a rumor that was involved in the tragic Halloween crush in Seoul that caused the deaths of at least 156 people.
Yoo, 36, was among the South Korean celebrities and influencers blamed on social media for attracting the thousands of partygoers who flocked to a narrow alley in Seoul’s Itaewon district on the night of Oct. 29.
Yoo, who lives in Itaewon, is known for his roles in the 2018 psychological thriller “Burning,” the 2020 zombie thriller “#Alive” and the 2021 fantasy series “Hellbound,” among others.
On Nov. 1, his talent agency UAA issued a statement clarifying that he was not in South Korea when the crush happened.
“Yoo Ah-in left on October 29 and is currently staying abroad,” the statement read. “He has nothing to do with the Itaewon disaster.”
The statement was issued as local authorities continue their investigation to determine the cause of the crush, which also left 152 others injured.
On Wednesday, investigators conducted raids on law enforcement and emergency response offices in Seoul.
The raids were reportedly conducted in response to the public seeking an explanation for why local authorities took little action despite receiving numerous calls about the impending danger hours before the deadly incident occurred.
Based on the latest death toll, 26 of the 156 recorded deaths were foreigners, 101 were women and 55 were men.
Actor Lee Jihan, who rose in popularity after appearing in the reality show “Produce 101,” was among those who were killed.
