Martial arts film “Vo Sinh Dai Chien” (“The Battle of Pupils”), which has been touted as the “Vietnamese ‘The Karate Kid,'” is coming to Netflix.
Directed by Thai Ba Dung and produced by Ba Cuong, the action film stars Tien Hoang, a U.K.-based martial artist who has performed stunts in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” The cast also includes five-time Muay Thai world champion and SEA Games medalist Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat.
In the trailer, Anh Khoa (Hoang) joins his school’s Vietnamese martial arts club, where he meets and falls in love with the highly skilled Trang (Kathleen Phan Vo). As their romance blossoms, Trang’s jealous ex-boyfriend, Hoang (Gi A Nguyen) uses violent means to break them apart.
Advertised as the “Vietnamese ‘The Karate Kid,'” the film hit theaters in the country on Jan. 1, 2021.
However, within a month, “Vo Sinh Dai Chien” was withdrawn from cinemas due to distributors limiting showings and scheduling odd screening times, VNExpress reports. According to the director and producer, despite good ratings from critics, cinemas and distributors ignored the film due to its lack of known actors.
“Vo Sinh Dai Chien” will be available to stream on Netflix on Monday, Jan. 23.
