Steve Harvey Nearly Confuses Miss Philippines and Malaysia When Announcing National Costume Winner

The 62-year-old “Family Feud” host excitingly announced the winner of the National Costume category on Sunday while standing next to Miss Malaysia, Shweta Sekhon, Complex reported.

 

“Earlier this week, all the contestants competed in the National Costume contest. Here’s the look at the winner, Philippines,” Harvey said during the segment showing a picture of Miss Philippines’ Gazini Ganados in an elaborate white gown.

However, Miss Malaysia asked for the mic said, “It’s not Philippines, it’s Malaysia.”

“Okay, well, let me explain something to you. I just read that in the teleprompter. Y’all got to quit doing this to me,” Harvey replied. “I can read, they said now, they’re trying to fix it now. See, this what they did to me back in 2015. Played me short like that. This is Malaysia. I really love this national costume of Malaysia. This is crazy.”

Many social media users quickly took to Twitter to talk about the issue.

Hours after the mishap, the Miss Universe Organization confirmed Harvey’s announcement of the winner via Twitter and said Miss Philippines did, in fact, win the category.

An insider from the organization also spoke to Deadline to clarify:

Incidentally, a previous post showing Miss Universe’s announcement of Miss Malaysia winning the National Costume has been deleted.

Miss Universe Organization has yet to release any explanation with the supposedly deleted tweet announcing Miss Malaysia as the winner.
