Stabbing at Chinatown festival in Vancouver leaves 3 injured

Three festival attendees were hospitalized following a triple stabbing incident during Vancouver’s “Light Up Chinatown!” festival on Sunday evening.
Suspect arrested: According to the Vancouver Police Department, the violent episode transpired shortly before 6 p.m. right next to the festival’s main stage situated at Columbia and Keefer Streets.
The suspected assailant, a 60-year-old man who is a stranger to the victims, has since been arrested. As investigations continue, the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Injured victims: BC Emergency Health Services dispatched five ambulances to the scene, promptly transporting the three injured parties to the hospital. The victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are in stable condition, as of this writing.
A message from the mayor: Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim released a statement Sunday night condemning the incident and expressing solidarity with the city’s Chinese community.
“Our city stands shoulder to shoulder with Light up Chinatown!, our Chinese community and all those who participated today. We will not allow this senseless act of violence to disrupt celebrations of all that makes our city great, and we will work each and every day to ensure Vancouver is a place where people can live, work and thrive in a safe environment.”
About the festival: The “Light Up Chinatown!” festival, which spanned two days, represents a celebration of the neighborhood’s resilience and spirit. Organized by the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, it seeks to revitalize the community.
Carol Lee, the Foundation’s Chair, expressed profound sadness over the weekend incident, highlighting the community’s safety as a top priority.
