Fans that were left hanging after the last episode of “Squid Game” now have something to look forward to, as the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed on Tuesday that a second season is in the works.
The return: With lead actor Lee Jung-jae at his side, Hwang revealed in an interview with Associated Press that the show garnered so much attention he was left with “no choice” but to work on another season.
  • “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” he said
  • While not much has been officially planned, Hwang assures viewers that Lee’s character Seong Gi-hun will be making a return.
  • “It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will be back and he’ll do something for the world.”
More details: A second season wasn’t originally planned by Hwang, who first conceived the idea for the show over a decade ago.
  • Just a few weeks after the show’s release on Sept. 17, Hwang said he felt the pressure of having to live up to audiences’ expectations for another season.
  • In an interview with IndieWire, he said: “I think I do have the obligation to explain it to the fans and I’m thinking about Season 2, but at the time, I was so tired after finishing Season 1, I couldn’t really think of Season 2. But now that it’s become such a big hit, people would hate me if I don’t make a Season 2, so I feel a lot of pressure and think I’d have to. The big success of Season 1 is a big reward to me, but at the same time it’s given me a lot of pressure.”
  • The show made history last month, becoming Netflix’s all-time most popular show. It was also the first Korean series to take the top spot on the streaming platform’s most-watched list in the U.S.
