Simu Liu took a playful jab at 2024 Golden Globes host Jo Koy during his opening monologue at the People’s Choice Awards on Sunday.
Liu’s punchline: Liu poked fun at the challenges faced by the Filipino American host of the major awards show, alluding to Koy‘s previous hosting at the Golden Globes.
“An Asian host of a major awards show — what could possibly go wrong?” he said after introducing himself as the host.
Koy, who accepted the 81st Golden Globe Awards hosting gig just two weeks before the ceremony was held on Jan. 7, previously faced criticism for some of the jokes he delivered, particularly those referencing Taylor Swift and Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie,” in which Liu portrays one of the “Ken” characters. He has since responded to the criticism.
Liu touches on ‘Barbenheimer’: On Sunday, Liu also took a turn touching on the same subjects, saying “‘Oppenheimer’ showed us that a three-hour drama about the moral complexities of creating the atom bomb could be a massive financial success … as long as it came out on the same day as ‘Barbie.’”
Swiftie status: Liu also humorously referenced Swift and her Eras Tour film, playfully acknowledging his Swiftie status.
“Who could forget that one little movie about a blonde American icon that had the entire country dressing up, dancing the night away and making huge waves at the box office? I’m talking, of course, about ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ movie,” he says before adding, “I was a Swiftie long before I was Ken.”
Liu takes advice: In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Liu said he received hosting advice from friends Trevor Noah and James Corden.
“[Noah] strikes the perfect balance of like being funny but like in such a celebratory kind of way,” Liu said. “That’s like, ‘We’re here to have a good time, to party. We’re not here to like try to offend anyone and try to make the most offensive joke we possibly can. Let’s just have a good time. It’s not that hard, you know. That was his advice.”
Notable winners at the Awards: Liu was nominated for best movie performance of the year alongside fellow “Barbie” actor and winner America Ferrera at the awards ceremony. “Barbie” won the movie and comedy movie of the year, while lead actors Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were named the movie stars of the year.
In the TV category, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” beat “Beef” as the most binge-worthy show of the year. In music, BTS’s Jungkook won male artist of the year, while Stray Kids were voted the best group/duo. Filipino American artist Olivia Rodrigo also received two awards: song of the year for “Vampire” and album of the year for “Guts.”
