🏔️ “Everest Man” conquers again

Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita, 54, reached Mount Everest’s summit for the 29th time on Sunday, breaking his own record.

• Rita made his first Everest summit in 1994 and has reaccomplished the arduous feat almost every year since then. 

• Only around 600 climbers from around the world reached Mount Everest’s summit in 2023, a year which also saw 18 confirmed dead on the mountain, its deadliest tally ever.

🎉 Celebrating 125 years in SF:

Chinese Hospital, the first Chinese hospital in the U.S., celebrated its 125th anniversary on May 9.

• Established in 1899 as the Tung Wah Dispensary to serve Chinese immigrants excluded from mainstream hospitals, Chinese Hospital has since evolved into a vital healthcare provider for the Chinatown community in San Francisco.

• Last week, Assemblyperson Phil Ting announced a $5 million allocation from the state budget to construct a 23-bed subacute-care unit at the hospital.

Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric: Echoing his anti-Chinese language during the COVID-19 pandemic, 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump is seizing on China as a boogeyman when talking about border security.

• “They’re probably building an army from within. I mean, you look at what’s happening, because they’re very healthy young men for the most part. And it’s up to over 30,000 now. That’s a lot of people,” he told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt last month.

• According to US Customs and Border Protection, the number of Chinese migrants crossing the San Diego border have surpassed the number of Mexican nationals in recent months, making Chinese people the second-largest migrant group after Colombians.

🇺🇸 Turmoil at Miss USA:

UmaSofia Srivastava, a 17-year-old high school junior from New Jersey, relinquished her Miss Teen USA crown last week after Miss USA Noelia Voigt stepped down.

• Srivastava, the first Miss Teen USA of Indian and Mexican descent, said her values “no longer fully align with the direction of the organization.”

• Voigt cited her mental health in stepping down days after Miss USA social media director Claudia Michelle resigned from the organization over alleged “workplace toxicity” and bullying.
