Hello, Everyone!

California lawmakers are pushing for a bill that would allow diacritical marks, such as accents, to be used in non-English names on vital documents such as birth certificates, death certificates and marriage licenses.

The proposed Assembly Bill 77 seeks to overturn the current California law that prohibits the use of diacritical marks. Supporters of the bill, including Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco, argue that using such marks is essential to maintaining cultural identity and is important for diverse communities.

Currently, only seven states allow diacritical marks with limitations, while Pacheco's bill would have no restrictions on the number of marks being used. However, the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials is opposing the bill unless it is amended, citing concerns about the mechanics, cost and feasibility of implementing the change at the local level.

  • Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS), introduced a bill on Tuesday to establish an FBI hotline for tips on the Chinese government's illegal "police stations" operating in the United States. These "stations" have allegedly been providing assistance to Chinese nationals while also surveilling or harassing political dissidents. Marshall's bill would bar Chinese Communist Party agents from performing any law enforcement functions in the United States and engaging in surveillance, harassment, intimidation, or coercion of another person. If found guilty, they could face up to 10 years in prison. The FBI has previously shut down one such station in New York City.
