A recent mashup of the 2007 Radiohead album “In Rainbows” and the soundtrack of the 1996 video game “Super Mario 64” transports listeners back to the dawn of a new millennium.
On Jan. 14, YouTuber On4word uploaded a video titled “In Rainbow Roads (Radiohead – In Rainbows / Mario 64 Soundfont),” reorchestrating all 42 minutes and 26 seconds of the English rock band’s arguably most colorful work with shimmering bell synths, soft snares and Mario’s “Oof” sound effect that many listeners will immediately recognize from the Nintendo 64 classic.
From “Bodysnatchers” and “Nude” to “All I Need” and “Jigsaw Falling into Place,” the soundscapes painted by Radiohead’s main vocalist Thom Yorke and the sonic palette of “Super Mario 64” blend well together to portray a liminal and otherworldly atmosphere that soothes the soul and harkens to simpler times.
As of this writing, the YouTube video has garnered over 128,200 views and 12,000 likes.
On4word is no stranger to musical “Super Mario 64”-themed mashups, having also created covers of Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know the Better” and Aphex Twin’s “Alberto Balsam.”
