Disney and Pixar’s upcoming original feature film “Elemental” has been selected as the closing film of the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival.
The highly anticipated animated romantic drama will make its world premiere at the prestigious festival on May 27.
According to a recent press release, “Elemental” is the fourth Pixar film to premiere at Cannes, joining previous hit films “Up,” “Inside Out” and “Soul.”
“As we all emerge from our pandemic cocoons and come together in story rooms, animation dailies and impromptu brainstorming sessions, it’s a joy and honor to have Pixar back on La Croisette,” Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, said.
“Directed by the extraordinary storyteller Peter Sohn, ‘Elemental’ is so funny, full of heart and, frankly, stunning to see. It was created for audiences to experience on the big screen and I love that it’ll make its world premiere at Cannes,” he continued.
“Elemental,” which stars Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, is set in Element City, a place where water, fire, land and air elements live.
Ember Lumen (Lewis) and Wade Ripple (Athie) come from different parts of the city but experience a strong connection with each other despite not being able to touch.
In addition to Lewis and Athie, the film’s cast includes Catherine O’Hara, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ronnie del Carmen, Joe Pera and Mason Wertheimer, among others.
Director Peter Sohn, who worked on the film for seven years, previously worked on classic Pixar films such as “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille.” “Elemental” is his directorial debut.
“Elemental” will hit cinemas on June 16. Watch its official trailer, which was released last month, below.
