Before becoming the muscular man that he is today, Zhang Shuai, a senior student at the Heilongjiang Institute of Technology in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China, was once considered obese.

The 22-year-old student, who now works part-time as a fitness instructor, got into an accident two years ago that had led him to gain as much as 40 kilograms (88 pounds) in just six months, according to China Daily.

The accident took a toll on him, as he was also considered a star player on his college basketball team before his accident.

However, he finally decided that enough is enough; through sheer determination, Zhang spent copious amounts of time at the gym, exercising intensely, as well as adhering to a strict diet.
Half a year after his workout regimen began, he finally realized his dream to become fit again after losing 30 kilograms (66 pounds).

What’s even more, he picked up a new obsession: bodybuilding. And interestingly enough, he won a provincial bodybuilding competition where he became a champion with his newfound goal.
“In fact, the process brought me more than losing weight. I changed lots of unhealthy habits and my outlook has become more positive,” Zhang said.

Zhang is just one of the many bodybuilding stories that help inspire people to work hard for the body they want. A couple of perfect examples for story such as this were: “Korean Hulk” and the bodybuilding Taiwanese-American dentist — both of them were skinny before they got into the lifestyle.
