Netflix unveils trailer for sumo wrestling drama series ‘Sanctuary’

Netflix has unveiled the trailer and release date for its Japanese sumo wrestling drama series, “Sanctuary.”
“Sanctuary” follows a teenage troublemaker who becomes a sumo trainee and ends up clashing with a mute wrestler harboring a hidden past. Netflix characterizes the show as a raw depiction of the dark side of professional sumo wrestling, featuring young men driven by aspirations for wealth, romance, celebrity status and authority.
The official description reads, “This is the story of the sumo ring, where some may find sanctuary with a history of more than 1,500 years in Japan’s traditional culture and as a religious ceremony.”
Directed by Eguchi Kan, written by Kanazawa Tomoki and produced by Fujita Daisuke and Sakamoto Kaata, the show’s cast is packed with stars such as Ichinose Wataru (“Gintama Live Action the Movie”), Kutsuna Shioli (“Deadpool 2”), Koyuki (“The Last Samurai”), Taguchi Tomorowo (“Tetsuo”), Sometani Shota (“Parasyte”), Kaku So (“Kamen Rider Zero-One”), Katsuya Maiguma (“Dr. White”), Denki Groove frontman Pierre Taki, Kishitani Goro (“Black Butler”) and Sasano Takashi (“Cut”), among others.
As part of its strategy to expand its subscriber base in Japan, Netflix plans to roll out an array of Japanese original content in 2023. The line-up includes live-action adaptations of two popular manga series, “Yu Yu Hakusho” and “City Hunter,” as well as feature films such as “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” and “In Love & Deep Water.” The platform already boasts series like “Alice in Borderland,” which became the most-watched Japanese show on Netflix upon its debut.
“Sanctuary” will premiere on Netflix on May 4. Check out the trailer below:
