Nathan Chen Just Raised the Bar With a New Olympic Record

Those who have been hating on Nathan Chen for his performance in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics better recognize.

The 18-year-old two-time U.S. champion has been largely criticized for his showing in the short program in both the team competition and the men’s individual competition.

He struggled again on Friday and fell to 17th place in the men’s short program.

Today, he has redeemed himself with a historic SIX quadruple jumps in his men’s free skate program.

He executed five of the quadruple jumps cleanly, earning him a score of 215.08. He also demolished his previous best free program score by more than 10 points. 

In the history of the Olympics, no one had landed more than four quads. Chen himself has done five quads last year en route to the 2017 U.S. Title.

There are 15 skaters still yet to perform as of this writing including current top scoring skaters Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan (defending World and Olympic champion) and Javier Fernandez of Spain (two-time world champion).
