Naomi Osaka Called a ‘Terrorist’ For Supporting Black Lives Matter
By Ryan General
Tennis star Naomi Osaka’s support for the Black Lives Matter has received backlash from some of her followers on social media on Sunday.
Osaka often uses her platform to raise awareness on race relations, posting a photo to her 1.1 million Instagram followers depicting a George Floyd mural and protestors.
“When you tweet about the lootings before you tweet about the death of an unarmed black man,” was one of the many tweets she posted to her over 500,000 followers.
Osaka tweeted her frustration of people not doing more beyond digital protesting.
“I’m torn between roasting people for only posting the black square this entire week…Or, accepting that they could’ve posted nothing at all so I should deal with this bare minimum bread crumb they have given.”
Osaka called out those who used Black culture in their lives were strangely silent.
While many commended her posts, some took her comment negatively, with one going as far as labeling her a “terrorist” for it, reports the Washington Post.
“Naomi Osaka does not seem to be the pride of Japan,” a Twitter follower commented. “This is my own personal view after all, but I now recognize her as a terrorist. In the future I do not want her to get involved in tennis, a sport played by gentlemen.”
In response to her critics, Osaka tweeted, “I hate when random people say athletes shouldn’t get involved with politics and just entertain.
“Firstly, this is a human rights issue. Secondly, what gives you more right to speak than me?”
