The 2019 Korean spy drama “My Fellow Citizens!” is getting an American adaptation titled “The Company You Keep,” starring Milo Ventimiglia and Catherine Haena Kim.
ABC had originally ordered “The Company You Keep” to pilot before picking it up for a full season, reported Variety. It’s now slated to release midseason on ABC in 2023.
The premise for the adaptation is similar to the original KBS drama, which starred Choi Si-won of the K-pop group Super Junior along with Lee Yoo-young (“Dr. Brain”) and Kim Minjung (“Mr. Sunshine”).
Ventimiglia will take on the role of Charlie, a con man who unknowingly endangers his line of work after a night of passion with undercover CIA officer Emma (Kim) turns into romance. Neither reveals their true identities, though it’s only a matter of time when Emma is out to catch the criminals intertwined with Charlie’s family.
The series will also star William Fichtner as Leo, Tim Chiou as David, Freda Foh Shen as Grace, James Saito as Joseph, Sarah Wayne Callies as Birdie, Felisha Terrell as Daphne and Polly Draper as Fran.
Julia Cohen, who wrote the pilot, serves as executive producer and co-showrunner with Phil Klemmer. Ventimiglia will also be executive producing alongside Russ Cundiff, Jon M. Chu and Caitlin Foito of Electric Somewhere, Todd Harthan and Lindsay Goffman with Deanna Harris as producer. Ben Younger (“Bleed For This”) took the lead on the pilot episode as director and executive producer.
“The Company You Keep” joins a number of anticipated American adaptations of Korean dramas that are in various stages of production, including the K-dramas “Crash Landing on You,” “W: Two Worlds” and the latest hit legal drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.”
