“One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda’s highly anticipated new anime, “Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation,” has been revealed to arrive soon on Netflix.
Countdown begins: “Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation,” adapted from Oda’s one-shot manga “Monsters,” has found its spot on Netflix’s homepage with a confirmed release date of Jan. 21. The anime will be a one-episode exclusive with a runtime of 25 minutes.

Relation to One Piece: The 46-page manga the anime is based on was originally published in Weekly Shōnen Jump’s Autumn Special issue in 1994, predating “One Piece” by three years.
“Monsters” dives into the same universe as “One Piece,” with a story that unfolds in a region previously explored within the long-running series. The story revolves around Shimotsuki Ryuma, a samurai and ancestor to the “One Piece” fan-favorite character Zoro. The anime not only explores Ryuma’s past but also sheds light on the origin of Zoro’s famous sword, Shusu.
Eagle-eyed fans might recognize Ryuma as the character who once appeared as a zombie in the Thriller Bark Arc of “One Piece.”
From manga to animation: The animation is helmed by Sunghoo Park (Jujutsu Kaisen) and E&H Production, a newly established studio featuring the talents of character designer Takashi Kojima and art director Fuminao Akai. It is set to feature music by Hiroaki Tsutsumi.
