A tip led to the arrest of 55-year-old British-born Chadwick in Mexico on Sunday, South China Morning Post reported.
The suspect, a naturalized U.S. citizen who made his millions in property development, has been extradited to the U.S. early Monday to face trial for the alleged murder of his Malaysian wife in 2012.
A fugitive on the U.S. Marshals’ most-wanted list, Chadwick has been in hiding since January 2015, when he failed to appear in court.
His arrest came soon after a $100,000 reward was offered for information leading to his capture, reported BBC.
The case generated much attention at it even inspired police to release a podcast – Countdown to Capture, attracting hundreds of tips worldwide.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Newport Beach Police Chief Jon Lewis revealed that they received a tip with some general information that allowed them to pinpoint the fugitive’s exact location.
According to Lewis, Chadwick was flown to Los Angeles immediately after he was arrested by immigration officials near Mexico City on Sunday night.
“We believe that [he] has been in Mexico since his disappearance,” Lewis was quoted as saying. “He used a variety of aliases and obtained several fake IDs. He stayed in high-end hotels but when [they] began requiring passport identification he turned to more modest accommodation.”
Back in 2012, Chadwick contacted the police to notify them that his wife, Quee Choo, had been killed by “Juan,” a handyman. He claimed that the man then took him hostage inside their home in Newport Beach before forcing him to drive to Mexico to dump the body of his murdered wife.
Investigators, who later found Chadwick just a few miles from the Mexican border, eventually arrested him after they found some scratches on his neck and blood under his nails. His wife’s body was found days later in a bin near San Diego city.
The suspect, who was accused of strangling his wife over a dispute due to a possible divorce, was soon released on a $1 million bail following his surrender of both his U.K. and U.S. passports. He vanished two years later.
Reports stated that the couple’s friends revealed their marriage was rocky. Quee Choo Chadwick who grew up in Malaysia suspected her husband of cheating, but stayed for the sake of their sons.
Police said Chadwick tried to misdirect the authorities on his trail by purposely leaving clues that he had escaped to Canada. If found guilty of the murder charge he is now facing, Chadwick could serve life in prison.
