K-pop Weekly: Queen BoA returns, NMIXX gets glittery, BTS’s RM reveals album tracklist and featured artists

Happy holidays! This week was a bit lighter on music, but there were still a handful of noteworthy releases, starting with the long-awaited return of K-pop queen BoA and her album “Forgive Me.” KANGDANIEL released a repackage album titled “The Story : RETOLD,” and NMIXX got the Christmas season started early with their first holiday single, “Funky Glitter Christmas.”

BoA, the “Queen of K-pop,” has returned after two years with new album “Forgive Me” and its title track of the same name. The album also includes the B-sides “Zip,” “Sketch,” “After,” Midnight” and “Hope.” Half of the album was co-written and co-composed by BoA.

Boy group TEMPEST is back with their third mini-EP “ON and ON,” a mere three months after their previous release “Shining UP” in August. The new EP is led by the title track “Dragon.” Members LEW and Hwa-rang co-wrote “Dragon” and the side track “Loving Number.” Hwa-rang also penned the rap portion for the side track “Raise Me Up.”

JYP Entertainment rookie girl group NMIXX released their first holiday single, “Funky Glitter Christmas.” The single was co-written by Justin Reinstein of NuVibe Music, who has previously written for TWICE and co-wrote the forthcoming ITZY title track “Cheshire.” NMIXX’s holiday track kicks off their “Intermixxion Single” series, which will be an assortment of special tracks, concepts and performances.
Boy group TO1’s EP “UP2U” is led by the title track “Freeze Tag.” Its B-sides include “Troublemaker,” “Rude Boi,” “Retro !ove” and “Fill In.” Member J.You penned the rap lyrics for “Rude Boi,” and Chan composed and wrote for “Retro !ove.”

K-pop soloist KANGDANIEL released his repackage album “The Story : RETOLD” through his label KONNECT Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment Korea. The repackage is a follow-up to his first full-length album “The Story” and comes with three new additional tracks. “Nirvana,” featuring pH-1 and WDBZ, acts as the title track, while “Selfish” and a remix of “Ride 4 U” are the fresh B-sides.
TWICE’s Jihyo sang “A Strange Day” for the original soundtrack of K-drama “Summer Strike,” starring former AOA member Seol-hyun.

BIBI served up another music video from her first full-length album “Lowlife Princess: Noir.” The music video for “JOTTO” depicts an abusive relationship. It is the fourth song off the album to receive the music video treatment, joining the likes of title track “BIBI Vengeance,” “Sweet Sorrow of Mother” and “Animal Farm.” Physical copies of the new album come with the usual goodies, but fans praised BIBI for including cute and small self-defense weapons.

Things I’m Stanning: BIBI’s “Lowlife Princess: Noir” album has been one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and it delivers. It’s a prime example of the masterful work that can be produced when an artist has a clear vision and the team to execute it without fear. Every music video track is coated in high concept production and feels cinematic as a result. “JOTTO” particularly deserves praise for pushing boundaries and depicting real and harrowing experiences that the bubbly facades of the K-pop industry hardly ever step into.

- BTS leader RM revealed the tracklist for his album “Indigo,” which includes features from artists such as Anderson .Paak, Erykah Badu and Tablo, among others. RM will also host a concert for 200 lucky fans in celebration of the album’s release.
- K-pop boy group EPEX announced a nine-city U.S. tour.
- Monsta X rapper Joo-heon is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming Netflix film “Lost in America,” alongside Charles Melton and Rebel Wilson.
- Japan’s largest fan media company Skiyaki is closing the official Japanese website for boy band Omega X and its related social media channels.
- K-pop boy group VERIVERY had their first music show win since their debut. Their new song “Tap Tap” earned them first place on “Show Champion.”
- GOT7’s Jinyoung plans to begin serving his mandatory military enlistment in March 2023.
- LE SSERAFIM will make their Japanese debut with a Japanese version of “Fearless” on Jan. 25. They also were the inspiration behind a webtoon called “Crimson Heart” that was released on Naver.
- ARMY has called out GQ magazine for what they claim is a xenophobic remark about BTS.
- Chef Gordon Ramsay is continuing his meetups with Korean celebrities, this time making appearances in “Singles Inferno” star Song Jia’s vlog and the latest episode of “The WILLBEN Show” as William and Bentley dine at Ramsay’s new burger restaurant.
