Christian Fauria of Boston’s WEEI has been suspended after doing an incredibly racist impression of NFL agent Don Yee who represents New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The incident occurred during the sports radio network’s “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria” show on Friday when the hosts talked about how a columnist from the Boston Herald got pranked by a guy who pretended to be Yee. The hosts then tasked Fauria to read the fabricated story that the troll sent to the columnist.
However, instead of just going with it like a normal, decent human being, Fauria decided to read the story in a stereotypical Asian accent, according to Deadspin. Listen to the recording below:
I’m gonna be Don Yee,” the former Patriots tight end said before beginning his sketch. “For me, I don’t know why, Don Yee sounds like an Asian guy.”
The other hosts can be heard laughing as Fauria continues to display his incredibly racist sense of humor, and tried to justify their actions by playing a clip of Yee speaking to prove that he doesn’t have an accent.
One of the hosts then pointed out that he actually “sounds like a Caucasian” as a bamboo flute plays in the background during this part of the segment.
But Fauria continued with his mockery, saying that “it’s so much more fun that way.”
Later that same day, WEEI issued an apology statement to the NFL agent and others who have been offended by Fauria’s racist sketch. The network wrote:
Earlier today during his show, Christian Fauria impersonated athlete agent, Don Yee in an insensitive and ill-conceived attempt at humor. We regret Christian’s commentary and we apologize to Mr. Yee and those offended by the segment. We do not support or condone Christian’s comments, and we have suspended him for five days effective immediately.”
Fauria also offered an apology to its followers as well as to Yee through his Twitter account:
