Police Seek Help to Find Hit-and-Run Driver That Left Father in Critical Condition in SD

The incident happened in the parking lot of Food for Less in 5975 University Avenue at around 3 p.m., San Diego police Officer Robert Heims told NBC San Diego.

Tu Hoang Lam was buckling his 6-year-old son in the backseat of his vehicle when a silver Saturn Vue suddenly crashed into his car, pinning him against his 2017 Toyota Corolla. The driver reportedly stayed in that position for 10 seconds before driving away as witnesses started to gather at the scene.

The driver exited onto Redwood Street and was captured by a surveillance camera of a nearby business.

Lam’s son, who was unharmed, unlocked his father’s phone for a concerned bystander who helped him contact their family.

Lam suffered a pelvic fracture and other serious injuries. Authorities rushed him to Scripps Mercy Hospital.

“Your mind just loses all focus. I see it in the kids; I see it in his wife; I see it in all of our family,” Ben Xavier, Lam’s younger brother, told NBC San Diego. “So, you know, the best thing for us to do right now is to rally.”

Lam is now in critical condition after several operations for his injuries, according to the GoFundMe page set up to help the family. However, he continues to be in a medically induced coma and will need to undergo additional surgeries in the coming days to treat all the internal damage.

They have currently raised over $29,000 of its $250,000 goal, at the time of this writing.
