Netflix announced on Wednesday that Dan Lin, founder of Rideback Productions, will serve as the next chairman of the company’s film division.
The announcement: Lin, 50, will be succeeding Scott Stuber, who served as head of Netflix Film for seven years before noting his departure last month to start his own media company. Lin is set to take the new position on April 1 and report to Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria.
About Lin: Lin, known for his work on projects like the live-action remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and the Oscar-nominated film “The Two Popes,” is the CEO and founder of Rideback Productions. The son of Taiwanese immigrants was also a former senior vice president of production at Warner Bros. where he produced movies such as “The Departed,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “The Lego Movie” and “It.”
Netflix Film plans: The streaming giant is expected to focus on quality control and reduce the number of films it produces annually, with Lin’s role expected to differ from Stuber’s era of lavish budgets and limited oversight. Netflix remains committed to its streaming-first strategy, resisting the trend of other services entering the theatrical marketplace.
“While I’ve been approached many times during my past 15 years at Rideback, I could truly never imagine leaving until Bela reached out with this incredible opportunity,” Lin said in a statement.
