Constance Wu has returned to Instagram after a three-year break from the social media platform.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the “Crazy Rich Asians” star told her followers that she spent time recovering during her break. Wu, 40, also mentioned the 2021 film “I Was a Simple Man,” in which she plays Grace.
While I was off the grid recovering, I took a little break from my acting career. But during that time I did do a couple select small projects with people I love and trusted,” Wu wrote. “I Was a Simple Man was one of those projects. It premiered at Sundance last year and is now available for streaming on Criterion.”
Since I wasn’t on social media back when it came out, I wasn’t able to share. But now that I’m back on here for a bit, wanted to share this beautiful film by my dear friend [Christopher Makoto Yogi] who I love and admire very much,” she continued. “Loved the cast and crew and heart of this experience. A wonderful experience and an incredible film.”
Wu took a break from social media following the backlash she faced after posting tweets in 2019 that expressed her frustration over the news that her sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” would be renewed for a sixth season. Several celebrities low-key threw shade at her on Twitter amid the controversy and also after ABC eventually canceled the show.
The “Hustler” actor returned to Twitter earlier this month to announce her new book “Making a Scene.” She also shared that she had survived a suicide attempt following the backlash over her “Fresh Off the Boat” tweets.
In addition to her Instagram post about “I Was a Simple Man,” Wu highlighted her Amazon Prime series “Solos,” which also stars Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba, Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens and Nicole Beharie.
Solos was another project I did while I was off of social media, recovering, so I wasn’t able to share it on here when it premiered on [Amazon Prime] last spring,” Wu wrote. “But wanted to share it now bc it’s a beautiful, moving show with some extraordinary fellow actors.”
Each episode is only one actor (which made it a very COVID safe work environment) in a standalone story but the episodes are all thematically connected by their reverence for the human condition,” the actor explained. “The theater nerd in me loved how I essentially got to do a 16-minute monologue. (Fellow thespians will appreciate!) It only took two days to shoot and I had a wonderful experience with the crew and director David Weil who was as kind and compassionate and caring as could be.”
I shot this a few months after giving birth and I was nursing my baby between lighting setups so you can also check out my temporary boob job in it lol,” Wu added.
