Meet the Chinese Pop Star Who Inspired One of Stan Lee’s Last Superheroes
By Ryan General
Just before his passing last week, Stan Lee unveiled his last superhero — a badass Chinese female entertainer and crimefighter named Jewel.
The comic book icon, who passed away last Monday at age 95, spent the majority of his years bringing to life well-known characters in the superhero genre, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and the Avengers among many others.
Lee’s latest creation was unveiled by his studio POW! Entertainment in Shanghai last month. It was reportedly based on Chinese pop singer Gloria Tang Tsz-kei (popularly known by her stage name G.E.M.).
G.E.M., who is often compared to Taylor Swift, has millions of fans in China.
“Never had I thought I would become a superhero one day! Super excited!” G.E.M. captioned on Instagram.
While the studio has yet to provide details on Jewel and her superhero abilities, she has been described as a “world-touring pop star by day and a superhero in disguise by night.”
The character reportedly acquired her superpowers after a “mysterious incident involving her grandmother and a charm bracelet.”
Lee reportedly had always wanted to create a Chinese superhero and was inspired to finally make one after a chance encounter with G.E.M. in Hong Kong last December, according to South China Morning Post.
After Lee’s death, the singer expressed her grief in an Instagram post.
“One of the sweetest and most humble person I’ve met. It’s my honor to have met you and share meetings on your creative and thought process,” she wrote.
