A 67-year-old Asian grandmother was transported to the emergency room at Boston Medical Center after suffering from injuries during a violent robbery on May 23.
What happened: In a social media post, Instagram user annie_ihc, who goes by Annie, said the incident occurred at 10:18 p.m. around the corner of Washington and Northampton Street.
  • The elderly woman was allegedly knocked to the ground, punched and beaten up by an unidentified assailant while attempting to take her purse.
  • Annie’s grandma clung to the attacker’s legs while clutching her purse.
  • Bystanders heard her screams and immediately chased the attacker off. They called 911, and medical responders rushed her to a local hospital.
  • While there is no evidence of a potential hate crime, Annie told NextShark the attacker was yelling at her grandmother during the assault.
  • “But since my grandmother does not understand English, she was not sure what the assaulter said. However, we thought it might have been related given the recent atmosphere and treatments towards Asians,” Annie told NextShark.
The aftermath: Annie received a phone call about what happened to her grandmother three hours after the attack.
  • Scan results showed no broken bones, but the woman suffered swelling and bruising to her left face.
  • Annie’s grandmother was discharged from the hospital the following morning at around 3-4 a.m. She is now recovering at their home.
  • The family has filed a police report about the incident.
  • Annie hopes the post will help spread awareness about the violence Asian Americans are facing across the country.
