Las Vegas Man Sings Country Version of ‘WAP’ and It’s a BOP
By Carl Samson
An emerging singer from Las Vegas has gone viral on the internet after teasing a country version of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP.”
Travis Yee, who calls himself the “Asian Country Singer,” recorded the summer hip-hop smash to the tune of Garth Brooks’ “The Dance” — and somehow turned it from raunchy to ranch-friendly.
Yee, 35, is a web designer originally from San Francisco. He developed an affinity for country music while driving to the San Diego Comic-Con 15 years ago.
“My iPod failed and all that was on the radio was country music,” he told HuffPost. “I wasn’t going to go without music so I listened and ended up singing along to the Zac Brown Band.”
Apparently, one thing led to another, and next month, Yee will be releasing his debut single “Everything But Country.”
The rising star currently promotes on multiple social media platforms, including TikTok, where he has some 130,000 followers.
Among his covers, Yee’s rendition of “WAP” has so far garnered the most attention, raking in almost half a million views on YouTube.
People have since asked him to post a full version, with one fan claiming to use the track for their wedding.
Brooks himself complimented the aspiring singer, albeit for an earlier video in which he covered “Friends in Low Places.”
“You look like you’re 12,” Brooks said after hearing Yee’s voice, which the latter himself noted to “mismatch” his body.
“I don’t know if you’re through with school yet, stay in school of course,” Brooks continued. “But hell, if I sounded like that I’d be running to Nashville.
“That’s amazing. Very cool.”
Needless to say, people are clearly loving Yee’s “WAP” cover, with many praising him for turning a “horrible” song into good music:
“This is the ‘WAP’ we didn’t know we needed!”
“I’m so glad you remixed this into something I can play for my kids.”
“Please more, I can’t get enough of this and it’s the only version of ‘WAP’ my boyfriend will put up with!”
“I would give my WAP for a full version.”
