Anna Akana Got Drunk and Came Out as Queer at the Streamys
By Ziye Wang
YouTube sensation Anna Akana made a surprise revelation while delivering her acceptance speech for best acting in a drama at the 2018 Streamy Awards on Oct. 22.
The 29-year-old actress, who stars in the YouTube Premium original series “Youth & Consequences,” admitted to not having prepared a speech before saying, “People need us more than ever. Marginalized groups need us more than ever. I’m not only a woman of color, but I’m also a queer woman. Please get out to the polls and vote.”
After the show, Akana took to Facebook to reveal that her unplanned announcement was due to the fact that she did not expect to win and “got very inebriated.”
Fans and members of the queer community on Twitter were quick to embrace Akana and welcome her into the family.
