Michelle Yeoh is among the star-studded cast of Disney Plus’ “American Born Chinese,” the series adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s award-winning graphic novel of the same name.
Yeoh will be joining Daniel Wu (“Into the Badlands”), Chin Han (“Mortal Kombat”), Ke Huy Quan (“Indiana Jones”), Ben Wang (“MacGyver”), Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann (“Havoc”) and newcomer Jim Liu in the project, reported Deadline.
The upcoming action-comedy series follows ordinary teenager Jin Wang, to be played by Ben Wang, whose life changes after meeting a new student named Wei-Chen, to be played by Liu. The high schoolers get caught in the middle of a war between the gods of Chinese mythology.
Yeoh is set to play the role of Wei-Chen’s aunt Guanyin, while Yann will play Jin’s mom, Christine Wang. Meanwhile, Wu was cast as the legendary Sun Wukong, also known as the “Monkey King” from the Chinese epic “Journey to the West.”
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Daniel Destin Cretton is set to direct the series, as NextShark previously reported. Yang and Cretton have also signed up to executive produce the upcoming show.
The new show, which will begin production this month in Los Angeles, comes 22 years after Yang first sold the title as an independent black-and-white minicomic and 16 years after it was published by First Second Books.
