Many of us can’t start our days without a piping hot cup of joe. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the morning alone seems to kick the senses into gear.
Which is why it’s so surprising that, according to science, drinking coffee in the morning is less than ideal. In fact, it’s downright disadvantageous.
In a video on the subject by Youtube channel AsapScience, it’s explained that consuming coffee in the early morning, a peak cortisol production time, is counterproductive.
Cortisol, commonly known as the fight or flight hormone, is usually at its highest levels in the body in the morning from 6-10 a.m., but especially from 8-9 a.m, as part of our body’s attempt to keep awake according to our built-in circadian clocks. Drinking coffee during that time both lowers the body’s natural production of cortisol while also diminishing the effects of the caffeine, leading to higher tolerance and increased addiction. That means that you should drink your coffee after 9 a.m., when cortisol levels are decreased, or at least after one hour from first waking up.
Cortisol production rises and drops throughout the day, and aside from the morning, main cortisol production hours include the hours between 12-1 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Consuming coffee outside of those hours is best.
