After years of a career hiatus, “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung returned to the UFC ring this weekend with an unforgiving first-round KO over Dennis Bermudez.
Jung, 29, stopped fighting in 2013 to render the two-year military service that’s mandatory in his native South Korea. He also sustained a shoulder injury in his last match against Jose Aldo, MMA Fighting noted.
On Saturday, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 104, Jung immediately faced Bermudez, 30, who ranked 10th and was coming off from back-to-back wins.
While Bermudez landed hits early, Jung, being the “zombie” that he is, recovered quickly and finished the former with a right uppercut at 2:48 in the first round. He succeeded with some more shots before the referee rushed to stop the fight.
A victorious Jung said shortly (via Fox Sports):
“From the time that I was away from the game, I was practicing a lot. One of the things I worked on the most was my wrestling as well as my footwork. Footwork didn’t work out so well.”
“I wasn’t really expecting (the uppercut). It just happened,” he added.
