T.O.P’s Mother Confirms Son is Finally Awake, Can Leave ICU Tomorrow

After a worrying few days, BIGBANG’s T.O.P seems to have finally shown some positive signs after the rapper’s mother reportedly confirmed to local press that he has opened his eyes for the first time in three days.

The talented K-pop artist, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, was found unconscious on Tuesday morning of an apparent drug overdose. Choi was rushed to the Ewha Woman’s University Mokdong Hospital in Seoul where he remained unconscious and relying on a respirator to breathe in the ICU.

At 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, T.O.P’s mother updated reporters on her son’s condition right after her visit, AllKpop reports.

“My son’s condition has improved a lot. I had eye contact with my son,” the elated mom was quoted as saying.

While she was reportedly in a hurry, she also shared that her son was able to recognize her.

Earlier reports about the condition of the 29-year-old K-pop star have been conflicting. The police have made claims that he was not actually unconscious and just asleep, while T.O.P’s mother stated that he was unconscious when he was rushed to the hospital.

To clarify any misinformation, doctors at the Ewha Womans University Hospital called for a press conference yesterday. Kim Han Soo, the hospital’s public relations head, gave the following statement:

“Our emergency staff examined him and found the patient was in a state of deep sleep and semiconsciousness.

”His pupils were contracted, and he had decreased corneal reflection, which only showed a reaction to strong stimulus. He was suffering from respiratory failure due to low levels of oxygen and high levels of carbon dioxide. As he was in critical condition, which we gave him necessary emergency medical care for, he was brought into intensive care at 4:50 PM KST.”

One June 8, the hospital finally gave their most positive update of Choi’s condition (via AllKpop):

“Choi has regained consciousness. His heart rate, respiration, and other vital signs are stable. We judge that it’ll be okay for him to leave the intensive care unit tomorrow.

“According to the results of the examination that were complete after Choi regained consciousness, the doctors believe he will need mental health treatment from now on.”
