Season 1 of the deadly survival game series “Squid Game” had only one contestant come out on top, with the rest killed off in a number of ruthless, heart-wrenching scenes – or were they?
On the red carpet of the PGA Awards on Saturday, the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke to Deadline about whether fans might see the return of their favorite cast members in the next season. Hwang replied with a laugh, “No, because most of them are dead.”
But he doesn’t completely shut down the idea, saying, “I’ll try something to bring them back to Season 2.” Pointing at Jung Ho-yeon, who plays Kang Sae-byeok or Player 067 on the show, he adds, “Let’s say maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see.”
Jung laughed at the director’s suggestion, adding to the list of possibilities for her character: “I could change my hair color. Let’s do a little, like, plastic surgery.”
The plot twist wouldn’t be anything new to K-drama addicts, already accustomed to the genre’s outlandish family secrets, unlikely returns and resurrections.
While Hwang says he is tinkering with ideas, he hasn’t yet begun writing.
“There will be more great games, that’s all I can say,” he said.
“Squid Game,” which became Netflix’s most-watched series after its release in September 2021, has won back-to-back awards during this year’s awards seasons.
Despite not having originally planned for a second season, Hwang announced it was in the works back in November, saying the fans left him “no choice.” He later revealed that Season 2 would follow Seong Gi-hun’s quest to solve the unanswered questions left from the first round of the Games.
“The focus [of the season] will be the story of [Lee Jung-jae‘s character] Seong Gi-hun unraveling,” he said. “The overarching plotline of Season 2 will be the story of the people that Gi-hun meets and the people he chases after.”
