A popular Taiwanese model allegedly drowned during an underwater photoshoot in Taiwan’s southern Pingtung County.
Olivia Ku had reportedly removed her scuba gear underwater for an aesthetic effect when the accident occurred. Ku was unconscious when she was retrieved by rescue personnel from the water on Monday afternoon, according to the Taipei Times. The 25-year-old later died at a nearby hospital after resuscitation attempts failed to revive her.
Authorities, however, have refused to provide details about the circumstances surrounding her death as the investigation was still ongoing as of press time.
The model was said to be an experienced amateur diver who regularly dove to help clean the seabeds along Pingtung as a volunteer for three years.
Ku, whose husband is related to Taiwanese politician Chiu Yi-ying, is also survived by a 4-year-old daughter.
The legislator later posted a Facebook status expressing his grief about Ku’s death.
“Your life was cut too short at the age of 25, but you will always be in the hearts of our big family,” he wrote.
Ku’s modeling agency, Eelin Entertainment, released a statement that expressed the company’s sympathies and its intent to provide assistance for the model’s funeral arrangements. While the agency refused to provide further comments, it stated that the photoshoot that caused Ku’s death was not work-related.
