Netflix announced two new anime series, “Ooku: The Inner Chambers” and “Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune,” during this year’s Anime Japan convention at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center over the weekend.
Directed by Abe Noriyuki and produced by Studio Deen, “Ooku” is the first anime adaptation of the popular manga of the same name by Yoshinaga Fumi.
“Ooku” is based on stories that emerged from the Ooku women’s quarters located within Edo Castle in Chiyoda, Tokyo.
The show envisions a world where gender roles are reversed following a plague that threatens the male population, leaving women to take over positions of power.
“Ooku” is slated to premiere later this year.
Meanwhile, “Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune,” which is based on a military sci-fi novel written by Carlo Zen, follows a young man who rises against oppressive authorities in a futuristic version of Earth.
His journey begins when he is recruited into an interplanetary military unit that suffers from a 70% casualty rate.
The new series will premiere in May.

During the recent convention, Netflix also showcased teaser art of the upcoming anime “Pluto,” which is based on the 1964 story arc “The Greatest Robot on Earth” from Osamu Tezuka’s “Astro Boy,” created by Urasawa Naoki and his long-time co-creator Nagasaki Takashi.
In addition to “Ooku” and “Yakitori,” Netflix has a diverse lineup of anime series and films coming later this year.
“Ultraman Final” will be released on May 11, followed by the film “Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King” on June 16 and “The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburg Part 2” in August. “Kengan Ashura” Season 2 will be available in September, while “BASTARD – Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy” Season 2 will be released later in the year.
“Gamera – Rebirth,” “My Happy Marriage” and “Akuma Kun” are also scheduled for release in 2023, but specific dates have not yet been announced.
