Recent wedding photos of a same sex couple in the Philippines has ignited a controversy over marriage equality.
Although same sex relationships are already accepted in many Asian countries, the same can’t be said when it comes to same sex marriages.
According to Rappler, renowned fashion designer Francis Libiran wedded his businessman partner Christian Mark Jacobs in an intimate ceremony over the weekend.
The strikingly attractive couple shared the special event with their families and friends at the high-end Lind Resort in Boracay.
Pictures of the couple were shared on several social media sites and while many congratulated the happy newlyweds, there were also those who bashed the two.
Many netizens voiced their opinion and used religion to defend their argument.
“Remember, God created man and woman only. This is against the will of God,” said one online user.
“That’s not love. That’s homosexuality! Homosexuality isn’t love at all,” said another.
The pair was quick to brush off the hateful comments and said that they anticipated the bashing. They also noted that they plan to get married in the United States for the legality of their union.
Many Asian countries today are still in opposition with the subject of same sex marriage. Taiwan could potentially be the first east Asian country to have same sex marriage in the event the new proposed law gets passed.
