A Singapore father is facing charges of “causing grievous hurt by means of a heated substance” after allegedly splashing hot water on his young child several times for nearly nine hours last Saturday.
According to the Straits Times, the man splashed hot water on the boy between noon and 8.48 p.m. It is unknown what circumstances led the boy to be taken to the hospital, but when doctors saw the wounds, they called the police. The five-year-old boy later died in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital the following day. The 24-year-old father, who was subsequently charged on Monday, is being remanded and is scheduled to reappear in court on Oct 31.
No further details regarding the crime have been provided in the suspect’s charge sheet. There was also no mention of the status or whereabouts of the child’s mother in the reports.
The family rented a flat on a 10th floor unit in Toa Payoh where they have been for two years now. None of the family members were named due to a gag order.
The boy has three other siblings, according to the Ministry of Social and Family Development. The other children have now been placed under temporary custody of the local Child Protective Service, and in careful watch of professionals and ministry officials.
The father could face at least 15 years in jail, plus a fine or caning, or up to lifetime imprisonment if found guilty of the crime.
