“Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu recently put Apple’s new iPhone XS Max to the test by shooting a short film in 4K.
WIRED magazine provided the filmmaker with the unit that he used for the film which he shot handheld-style using only the native camera app, stabilizer, and available light.

Chu did not use any additional equipment or lighting while filming and ruled out the color correction or any post-production trick during editing.
According to Chu, he found the iPhone quite impressive in handling moving shots and retaining colors in natural light.
“I’m moving around a lot, and the focus was adjusting as I was moving, but it was finding the subject really well,” he was quoted as saying.
“There’s a shot at the end where I’m rushing toward the garage–that’s using the built-in stabilizers. It’s pretty smooth.”
Chu further praised the phone’s color accuracy, admiring how it accurately captured the actual colors of the scenery.
“You can see the colors, they really pop,” he observed.

Impressed with the phone’s capabilities, Chu said he’s going to upgrade his iPhone X to the new iPhone XS Max.
“The weight, the density — it doesn’t feel like an inconvenience to hold it,” he said, noting that the iPhone XS Max “doesn’t feel like a plus phone.”
