It’s a moment of celebration for representation: Constance Wu has made it to Time Magazine’s list of “100 Most Influential People” for 2017, and there are some good reasons why.
Wu, who rose to fame with “Fresh Off the Boat”, is clearly outspoken on all things whitewashing, but she’s way more than just talk. Friend and fellow actress Lena Dunham wrote why the 35-year-old Virginia native deserved the slot:
“Constance Wu is a great actor. The anxious, steely, often lost-in-translation young matriarch she plays on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat is an invention as sharp and expansive as Lucille Ball’s alternative persona (only could Lucy do the accent?).”
“But Constance also knows that—as one of the only actors to portray Asian-American womanhood on television—she is tasked with being more than just an actor. And she takes this second gig just as seriously”
Dunham went on to praise Wu’s humor and generosity, which she appreciated when they came together for one of Hillary Clinton’s road campaigns. She described her as having a “monstrously big heart” with a passion for change, as well as an accommodating company for those who share their identity struggles.
Dunham also cited Wu’s stand against Hollywood’s dismissing of sexual misconduct in “our great men.” The “Girls” star wrote of her, “She chose honesty and fight over the neutrality so many think they need to maintain in order to further their careers. It was a hallelujah moment.”
Wu responded to the news of her being a “pioneer” in a tweet:
If anything, Wu is certainly on a roll. She recently snagged the lead role in the movie adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s “Crazy Rich Asians”, so fans couldn’t be more excited.
You go, Constance!
