China is the most optimistic country in the world when it comes to the future of the planet, according to a new poll.
Market research firm YouGov asked 18,235 people from 17 different countries to assess the world’s future for their online poll.
Almost twice as many Chinese respondents said the world is generally getting better (41 percent) than those in the next most optimistic country, Indonesia (23 percent). China was four times as likely as the global average (10 percent) to express optimism in the poll.
The United States was the fifth most pessimistic about the world getting better — 65 percent said it is getting worse as opposed to 6 percent who said the opposite.
The most pessimistic country was France, with 81 percent who said the world is getting worse and only 3 percent who said it is getting better.
Interestingly, Hong Kong, which is a territory of China governed under the “one country, two systems” policy since 1997, had the second highest rate of pessimism — 71 percent said the world is getting worse and 6 percent said it is getting better.
According to YouGov, the poll’s results show a weak relationship between a country’s wealth and its optimism about the future. The second most pessimistic country, Australia, has nearly 20 times as much wealth as the second most optimistic country, Indonesia.
China has experienced rapid economic growth since the 1990s. According to the Hurun Report, China had more billionaires than the U.S. for the first time ever last year.
